Color Negative Downsampling Vs. Direct Scanning
Color negative film scanned at 8000 samples per inch then downsampled is smoother, more detailed and exhibits considerably less grain aliasing than when scanned directly at the equivalent resolutions. From the same negative, Section A shows less of the effect in the darker tones and how grain aliasing can vary within a single scan due to different grain sizes in different densities.
Section B
• The left column contains a section of the original 8000 spi scan and two versions downsampled from it.
• The right column contains sections from direct scans.
• All sections are unsharpened and unfiltered.
• All sections are displayed at actual pixel size.
Each section represents a 1.27mm square of film.
